MAGGIE MAE
The Story of Maggie Mae
Last October (2000) Maggie was found in a ditch by the side of the road in Miami ,Florida. She had two smaller dog with her and we never knew if they were her puppies or not. Her skin was loose down to the ground, her fur was gritty and shaved to her skin.
She was originally adopted out from the pound to a woman through us who was looking for a friend for her dog. Maggie had a hard time waking up from her anesthesia and the woman got worried and took her to the vet. Maggie was suffering from severe anemia, erlichia and heartworms. The vet gave Maggie Mae 24 hours to live.
The woman freaked out and called Carol. She had just lost a sick dog and could not go thru another sick dog again.
Carol Picked up Maggie Mae and took her to Dr Fernandez. Dr Fernandez started her on antibiotics for her erlichia and told us that with care that Maggie Mae would be fine. Carol kept on telling me what a special dog this was.
On the rainiest night of year I drove
down to Miami and picked her up. I spent a month getting her worms, erlichia and
anemia under control. Her fur was gritting and course. But the whole time she
was an angel.
I made arrangements for her heartworm treatment and
arrangements for a long term foster home. I even had her visit ahead of time so
she would feel comfortable when she went there.
She ended up spending two weeks at Libby’s. There she learned how to go thru the doggie door and how to sit. When I went to pick her up she looked very happy hanging out with the two dogs, cats, and kids that lived at Libbys house. (Thank you Libby)
She sailed through her heartworm
treatment. (Thanks Dr Jean Burns). She spent the month with me recovering and
becoming more animated every day. I watched with amazement as her fur became
soft and Maggie became more active.
The thing that amazed me is with everything she had been through her golden
spirit shone through. and she always behaved like a lady. When it was time to
eat she sat in her spot waiting for her food. When its time to walk she would
come and sit and wait for her leash. And when I would wake up in the middle of
the night there she was-huddled with the other two on her back with her feet up
in the air.
And in the morning she would come by and suckle my nose to wake me up.
I thought I found her a great home. The person who wanted her fell in love with
her. Unfortunately, her dog did not.
"So let her stay." My husband Skip said. There's always room for one more. So I
said on that day that unless the most perfect family came along she could stay
right here with us.
and I figured it would stay that way.
On Sunday July 1, 2001 I received the most amazing phone call. The person on the other end of the phone told me about her golden Brandy that had died. Brandy had been a abused & neglected dog. Tied out at a neighbors house left out in the rain-she had heartworm. Sanna and her family took Brandy in and brought her back to life giving her a good and loving home. When she died she had her cremated and put her on the mantel with her pictures placed lovingly around her urn. This is not a woman who was a stranger to kindness. She had along the way had adopted severely medically compromised children and raised them.
I brought Maggie Mae to visit. She was greeted with a warm hello from the entire family. I could see from their faces that they fell right in love with her. When she went to see Kenny, one of Sannas grownup wards, who laid depressed in his bed. Well, Maggie Mae jumped on the bed and gave him a huge kiss on his face and he smiled. This when I knew that she would happy here with this family. That it was time for me to let her go. Maggie had found her forever home.

Maggie and Sanna
To Our sweet Maggie Mae. The Yenta of the doggie coconut telegraph. We miss you already but we know you have found the life you deserve and that we wished for you. We'll see you over the Rainbow.
Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high,
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere, over the rainbow, skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.
Our Maggie Mae died from Cancer in 2004. Thank you Sanna for giving our girl the best home ever and thank you Maggie Mae for all the lessons you taught us.
