BEAR
Hello my name is Christina Heflinger Hage. aka Dr Heflinger.
Some of you I have spoken with, and others this is my first contact. I am a
veterinarian in Weston Florida and I have been fostering a dog for 3 months. I
was able to save his life and rescue him from a family that was not taking very
good care of him and could no longer afford him. Here is a brief description
about him below, but if you need any more information please do not hesitate to
email or call. I will be fostering him until we find a good home for him. Any
help would be wonderful. He is a very special case and needs a very stable and
loving family.
Bear is a 4 1/2 year old yellow lab. He has been diabetic for 6 months and was
diagnosed with cataracts from his diabetes after 3 months. He was not very well
controlled with his diabetes and had a severe liver disease when I acquired
him. He also had full blown cataracts in both eyes and was therefor blind. He
has now fully recovered from his liver disease and has perfect blood work. We
raised money and got his cataracts removed, so now he can see. Other than his
well controlled diabetes and his eye drops after his surgery he is doing very
well. He is a typical hyper 4 year old lab!! He has a slight obsession with
cats that we are currently working on, he is not aggressive but very excited
about then. We are currently trying to train him to be able to live in harmony
with cats. Currently his medications include a veterinary diabetes diet,
insulin twice daily, and a few eye medications. The eye medications are slowly
decreasing with each visit to the eye doctor, but he may be on some for the rest
of his life to make sure he can continue to see.
So as you can see he is a very special dog and I would love to keep him, but
cannot have another big dog at the moment. He needs a caring family that
understands he will need constant care and monthly to every other month vet
visits to check his eyes and diabetes possibly for the rest of his life. He
could have many different complications from his diabetes throughout his life,
but if he stays well controlled the chances of having issues is very low. He
will possibly have a shorter life than other labs, but if his diabetes is well
taken care of he should have a wonderful life.
I am sorry this is such a long letter, but I want you to have all the
information and you can decide what you want to put on your web site or not.
Please feel free to give my work number or email to anyone you feel may be a
good candidate.
